What Is Kybella®?
Kybella® is an FDA-approved prescription injectable used in adults to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fullness under the chin. Clinically, that area is called submental fat, the layer of fat that sits just beneath the skin below your jawline.
The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid. Kybella® is approved for one area only: under the chin. That focus is part of what makes it such a precise tool for refining your profile.
How Kybella® Works on Submental Fat
Deoxycholic acid is what's known as a cytolytic agent. When it is injected into the fat layer under the chin, it physically breaks down the membranes of fat cells. Those treated fat cells are destroyed rather than simply shrunk.
Rather than tightening skin or adding volume, Kybella® works directly on the fat itself. Results come in gradually over a series of treatments, so the change looks natural, not sudden (Kybella®, 2026).
Kybella® Results: What the Research Shows
Kybella® was studied in two large clinical trials with more than 1,000 adults. Twelve weeks after their final treatment, 70.0% and 66.5% of Kybella® patients saw at least a one-grade improvement in chin fullness, compared to 18.6% and 22.2% on placebo. MRI scans confirmed the change: 43% of Kybella® patients had at least a 10% reduction in fat under the chin, versus 5% on placebo (Kybella®, 2026).
The results also hold. A follow-up of patients from those trials tracked them for three years after their last session (Humphrey et al., 2021).
Three years after their final treatment, 82.4% of Kybella® patients still showed at least a one-grade improvement in chin fullness, and 74% of those satisfied at 12 weeks remained satisfied. (Aesthet Surg J, 2021)

Every Kybella® plan starts with a consultation. Our medical staff will assess whether the fullness under your chin is fat, loose skin, or both, and screen for other causes of fullness in the area before treatment. This is also when your treatment plan and number of sessions are set.
The Treatment Session
Our medical staff will help map out a small grid under your chin, then places a series of tiny injections about one centimeter apart within the treatment area. Sessions are spaced at least one month apart. Most O Skin clients need between 2 and 6 sessions, depending on the amount of fat and the profile you want to achieve (O Skin Med Spa).
Recovery and Side Effects
There is no surgery and no surgical recovery. Expect temporary swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness, redness, or firmness under the chin after each session, which are the most common side effects. Swelling is the most common of these, so plan sessions around important events.
Less commonly, Kybella® can cause temporary nerve irritation that affects the smile or brief difficulty swallowing. In clinical trials, these resolved on their own. Our medical staff will walk you through the full safety profile at your consultation.
